One Nation Under God is a statement of what should seem self evident-we are a nation uniquely blessed of God.

One Nation Under God is a celebration of His protection and comfort.

One Nation Under God is a response to the ever advancing persecution being visited upon people of the Christian faith in this country.

One Nation Under God is a proclamation of ancient truths that eminate from an eternal Kingdom.

One Nation Under God is a challenge to seek out God and humble ourselves before Him.

One Nation Under God is a platform of praise to the greatness of our God.

"God’s Big Backyard"

July 14 – 18, 2008

Get ready for an outdoor adventure that starts in your own backyard and gets bigger each day as kids take the love of Jesus into their neighborhoods and communities.

In God’s Big Backyard, kids will participate in the large-group excitement of Backyard Bash, experience God’s Word at Backyard Bible Club, meet real-life servants at Community Corner, plus explore and create through fun-filled crafts, snacks, and games. Just step outside, take a look over your fence, and get started helping kids discover how rewarding service can be!

If you would like to be a part of this wonderful experience take a look at the list of helpers needed on the bulletin board right outside Compton Hall and volunteer to help in some way. Let’s make this summer program the best one yet. Please contact Mikki Moore or Alana Edds with any questions you may have about the event.

Registration forms have been mailed out and can also be found at the Welcome Center and on our church website at www.sunnylaneumc.com. Come and join the fun!!!

Welcome to our Church Family!

Please welcome Eden Anderson wife of Rev. Brian Anderson and mother of Ruthie and Caleb to our church family. She transferred her membership from Weatherford UMC on Sunday, May 25th in the Late Service. We already feel like you are a Sunny Laner Eden. Welcome.

Wow! What a week. We kicked off the summer with some fun activities to welcome upcoming sixth graders and to get into summer fun. On Friday, May 29, we went to a Ropes Challenge Course near Edmond.

Thanks so much to Andy Fugate for coming along as a sponsor and taking all the great pictures! We played group-building games and ate lunch together in the morning.

In the afternoon we went on the high ropes elements, which are very challenging. The next day we had a movie night here at the church and watched the movie "Bella". It is a very inspiring story with a very good message. Sunday night we had the first annual Parents versus Youth softball game. In spite of a slight dispute over who actually won, we had a lot of fun. Thanks Charlotte and Jimmy Northrip and Larry and Debbie Johnson for playing on the adult team.

Monday afternoon we went to the "Brick" and watched the Redhawks hit a grand slam home run to win the game, before having Marble Slab Ice Cream and playing in the fountains on the river walk. Tuesday, we bicycled around Lake Hefner on what must have been the hottest and windiest day of the year. It seemed that everything kept going

wrong, including several crashes and barely being able to ride around the lake. In the end sipping our icees and talking about how we could not wait to get a shower, we could say, it was very memorable.

We ended the week of activities by taking the benches that VIM paid for and Jack Burmeister and Jim Coonfield made to our United Methodist Children’s Home in Tahlequah. We then cooled off in the Illinois River with a float trip. I have to tell you that the Children’s Home really appreciated those benches. You may have seen one bench sitting outside the sanctuary a week or so ago and noticed how nice it looked.

There are two ponds on the Children’s Home campus and both looked very picturesque, both with Gazebos and beautiful trees, perfect for the benches. The maintenance man commented on how good they looked and said he would put a sealer on them before he put them out.

The director of the Children’s Home is also the director of the Boys Ranch and when he saw the Sunny Lane UMC van out in front, he came out and found us and he went on and on about the friendliness of Sunny Lane UMC. He was in town a little over a year ago with a couple of the boys from the Boys Ranch and he happened to visit here. He said that 15 people greeted them and the pastor and congregation made them feel right at home.

This summer I will be putting in my hours at camps and then be out of the office the following week. Next week is Youth Force Tulsa, which is a Youth service project from June 15 through June 20. Because of your generous support we have all been able to go for free. Thank you. We will tell you about it when we get back. I hope you are having a great summer.

United Methodist Women

Our purpose: To know God; to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ: to develop a creative supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.

Ladies Brunch: Eileen Musgrave and the Membership Committee worked diligently on the brunch which was held on June 7th, 10 AM – 1PM. Our theme was: "On The Beach." Invitations were mailed out to every woman in the church. Linda Kelton and Jacci Freno’s skit was superb. They had us rolling on the floor.

Martha Faires received the first membership pin and Myrt Brakhage received the second membership pin. Nadine Karry and Maxine McCage received the mission corsages.

Many of us are still thinking about the two games that Kay Brader had us play—we should have had the questions first then the picture and I am still wondering where the bear was—I did see a squirrel.

We all enjoyed the presence of Pastor Bauman. He looked pretty good in his beach attire.

SUMMER SCHEDULE: No General Meetings in June or July. Each small group (circle) will be making their own summer schedule. Be sure to check with your chairperson.

*Today is the day God cares for the integrity of creation, wills the healing and wholeness of all life, weeps at the plunder of earth’s goodness—and so shall we.

Today is the day God embraces all hues of humanity, delights in diversity and difference, favors solidarity transforming strangers into friends—and so shall we.

Today is the day God cries with the masses of starving people, despises growing disparity between rich and poor, demands justice for workers in the marketplace—and so shall we.

Today is the day God deplores the violence in our homes and streets, rebukes the world’s warring madness, humbles the powerful and lifts up the lowly—and so shall we.

Today is the day God calls for nations and peoples to live in peace, celebrates where justice and mercy embrace, exults when the wolf grazes with the lamb—and so shall we.

Today is the day God brings good news to the poor, proclaims release to the captives, gives sight to the blind, and sets the oppressed free.

Military Care Packages

VIM is in need of materials and cookies to send to military friends and family. Please provide current mailing addresses to Don Brader or to the church office. If you know how long the soldiers will be remaining at the address please share that with us, it helps to have this information also.

We understand that some of the packages we mail are not able to be delivered to the right person. If you hear that packages were or were not received let us know, we can reship or correct mailing addresses and try again. We hate that they did not receive packages but sometimes they are on temporary duty at another location. We designate the packages go to the commanding officer if the addressee is not available. And he then distributes the goodies to those around him. Thanks for your support.

Meet Pastor Larry Bauman

Pastor Bauman was born and reared in South Oklahoma City. He is a fourth-generation Oklahoma Methodist. At the age of eight, Larry gave his heart to the Lord during a Lay Witness mission. As a child, Larry was involved in scouting, ultimately achieving Eagle Scout rank. Larry was working as a Realtor when the Holy Spirit led him into the ministry.

Larry has a B. A. degree in Philosophy from the University of Oklahoma and he graduated with honors from seminary at Oral Roberts University. After graduation, Larry served churches in Ada, Wynnewood, Lawton, Enid, Tulsa, and Mustang.

Larry went on the Walk to Emmaus, Walk #23, and sponsored the first person from Ada First UMC to attend the Walk to Emmaus. While in Wynnewood, Larry was called upon by his District Superintendent to build the team that began Cross Point Emmaus. While at Willow View UMC in Enid, Larry led the church in a Capital Stewardship Campaign to build a new sanctuary. Through Larry’s involvement at St. Mark’s UMC in Tulsa, the church implemented an outreach to the local Hispanic community and developed a multi-cultural church model for people of all nations. Additionally, Larry has been involved with foreign missions, Promise Keepers, Meals on Wheels, Dayspring, Chrysalis, Torch, and Project Transformation, a Tulsa-based eight-week summer ministry to elementary age children.

Larry’s most recent appointment was as the pastor of Mustang UMC where he worked with the church to restructure the youth program, complete a new Rotation Sunday School area and begin the Upward Basketball ministry. They also held their first Alpha Course and in 2007 the church received over 50 new members into their congregation.

SLUMC is looking forward to God’s leadership as reflected through Pastor Bauman.

Recipe for Fatherhood

A man who wishes to be a great Christian father should consider the following:

A. Let your children see that you treat your own parents with love and respect. Honor them.

B. Let your children see that you love your heavenly Father.

C. Show in various ways that you love their mother. A loving home is a secure, stable, supportive home where each person is treated with tender loving care.

D. Listen to your children. Put down the paper, turn off the television, leave the computer and frequently ask what is going on in their lives.

E. Plan and execute trips and recreational activities together.

F. Take part in school, scouting, musical and drama activities with them. Praise sincerely whatever contribution the child has made to the event.

G. Make your home cheerful. Tell funny stories and laugh. Laughter at the table creates a happy environment.

H. When your children ask for it, give your best advice, but don't complain when they don't follow it. The school of hard knocks is still relevant.

I. Take them to worship regularly. The church helps provide guidance, stability and unity for families. And God can seal together the family that honors Him.

Quiet Beauty

A rose can be quite eloquent

When standing all alone;

It needs no vast accompaniment,

No pompous, royal throne,

For beauty is not always found

In suave sophistication,

But often stands just by itself

As simply God's creation!

John Wesley

The father of the Methodist Church is John Wesley. For him there was a definite connection between Christian doctrine and Christian living. It was John Wesley who said:

"Do all the good you can,

By all the means you can,

In all the ways you can,

In all the places you can,

At all the times you can,

To all the people you can,

As long as ever you can."

The General Rules provided the early Methodists a guide for social consciousness. Today, for us, the Social Principles give us guidance in how to live our lives. As stated in The Book of Discipline "Methodists in every age have sought to exercise their responsibility for the moral and spiritual quality of society."

If I Had a Million Dollars ...

Fifty years ago, one of the great saints of the Church was the missionary and author, Dr. E. Stanley Jones. When Dr. Jones died, he left one million dollars for Christian causes.

Where did he get the money? Why did he give so much away?

His income included considerable royalties from several best-selling books such as the important devotional book called Abundant Living.

Dr. Jones was generous in his giving to Christian work mainly because of his basic thought about money. He put it this way: "I only want enough money so as not to have to worry about money."

Dr. Jones knew that fretting about money could become bothersome and time-consuming. It could hinder a person and keep him or her from engaging in much needed Kingdom work. He knew that he didn't need a billion or even a million. He only needed enough to meet his family's greatest needs. The rest he could put into Christ's ministry. And he did.

Back to School for Skyline Children

As Summer begins for most of us, the staff at

Skyline are thinking of the 1500 children that they will be helping with back to school clothes and hygiene kits soon. One of the greatest needs they have is T-shirts in every size, from 8 to 3X for both girls and boys. They also need hygiene items such as soap, washcloths, shampoo, combs, and deodorant. While you are out shopping, please pick up some of these items and donate them to this mission so that we can in turn help Skyline meet this need.

They will begin distributing these items around the first week-end in August; they will also need volunteers to help the kids pick out clothes. Laura and Heather Peterson have helped in this capacity and will tell you how they were blessed by helping the children. Save a spot on your calendar for around August 5th to go down to Skyline to help the kids pick out clothes.

As Rev. Larry said, "you will be blessed twice." Once when you donate your gift and again as you see the smiles of the children who receiving it.

We will have a tub near the Pantry door to hold your donations. If you have any questions, please give one of us a call. Thank you for all you do to support Skyline. It is greatly appreciated.

What a true Blessing it was to be able to have flowers in the Sanctuary to honor Ernestine Miller's life and memory the Sunday after her passing and to share it with our Church Family. I would like to Thank Everyone who expressed their sympathy through kind caring words, phone calls, and cards. They brought comfort to the grieving heart of my husband over the recent death of his mother. Your thoughts and prayer have been a great comfort to my family.

Again Thank You,

Hal, Linda and Mike Miller

Thank you UMW Cookie Makers! You were all so generous with the cookies that you made for the new pastor’s Welcome Reception that cookies were still plentiful after the reception and those UMW volunteers working the reception donated the leftovers to be sent to the military members of our families overseas.

So, two boxes of cookies were sent the next day; one to a military hospital in Kuwait and the other to a military hospital in Afghanistan. The few cookies that would not fit in the boxes were given to the Daycare so each little angel had one with their lunch. Lots of love was received through your baking! Don Brader

Thank You: We would like to say "THANK YOU" to the Family Life Committee, the SPRC and everyone who helped with our last meal together. Thank you to all who brought and shared the delicious food!

We would also like to thank everyone for the gifts, cards, money, hugs, and well-wishes and for the tremendous outpouring of love. We will always cherish our time together with you at Sunny Lane UMC.

In Christ’s love, Rick and Sylvia

5th Sunday Special Offering

The Volunteers in Mission would like to remind

everyone that Sunday, June 29th is a 5th Sunday of the month and our designated time to ask for your financial donations in support of our mission projects.

Recently we have been visited by many more in the community requesting help from our Food Pantry and our cupboards were empty of some items so, Cathy Marooney, Laura Peterson, Jack Burmeister, and Jim and Betsy Coonfield went shopping for groceries. We had 5 shopping carts full and spent $549.00 to stock our Pantry. I suspect that as gasoline and other prices continue to climb, so will our requests for help.

We also purchased the lumber and man-power (Jack Burmeister and Jim Coonfield) needed to make the park benches that the Youth took to Tahlequah for the Children’s home there. The cost for the lumber was $350.00.

VIM has received a letter asking us to make some kits that are distributed by UMCOR in case of disasters. The kits were taken to Annual Conference by our Lay Delegate. We chose to do sewing kits and our cost was $175.00. We want to thank David Freno for taking them for us.

We were able to reach out to several of our church members who needed a helping hand and support. We also made some hygiene bags that are ready to be sent to a church or area that has experienced a crisis situation.

We are working on a Beautification project for landscaping the area around our church. We thank George Cockrum for the many years he has made it his mission to take care of our flowerbeds. He has done a wonderful job; but it is time for us to step up and take over this project. The plan has been approved by the Trustee committee and the Finance committee and will be presented in the next few weeks.

We look forward to your continued support and thank you again for all your donations so that we may reach out to others. Thank you,

The VIM Committee
